10 DAYS DESERT TOUR & COAST FROM CASABLANCA
Itinerary desert tour from Casablanca:
Day 1: Airport – Casablanca
With a transfer from the airport to your Casablanca hotel, your private desert tour of Morocco gets underway. Depending on your departure time, today’s excursion may include some site-seeing. If there is time, we can visit a few tourist attractions in Casablanca such as the Hassan II Mosque, Moroccan Mall, and a neighboring beach.
Day 2: Casablanca – Meknes – Volubilis – Fes (imperial cities)
We can finish the tourist destinations in Casablanca that time did not allow us to visit on Day 1 this morning. We’ll next drive to Meknes, an ex-imperial city encircled by one of Morocco’s major wine districts, following lunch in the city. We will make a brief break in Meknes before traveling to the Volubilis Roman ruins. You will have time to independently explore the ruins and mosaics or, for a more unforgettable experience, consider hiring a local guide. Then, we will go on to Fes, where we’ll stay the night in a neighborhood riad or hotel.
Day 3: Exploring Fes – guided tour of the city
On the third day of our desert tour, the focus will be exploring Fes, the spiritual center of Morocco. This will entail traveling to the following locations: the Karaouine Mosque, the Moulay Idriss Mausoleum, the Nejjarine Fountain, and the Medieval Medina (external visits only). After visiting the souks and Fes Jdid (New Fes) in the late afternoon, you’ll have the choice of having lunch at a typical restaurant in the center of Medina before being driven back to your accommodation.
Day 4: Fes – Ifrane – Midelt – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga Desert (desert tour)
Our desert tour starts today. Following breakfast today, we will travel to Ifrane. The “Switzerland of Morocco” is Ifrane. Once in Midelt, we’ll travel through the Ziz Valley before arriving at Erfoud. For its locally produced fossil goods, Erfoud is well known. It is also feasible to pause and discover more about the area and fossils. We travel to the historic market town of Rissani to explore its souk after Erfoud. The adventure comes to an end tonight at Merzouga, where we stay in a motel next to some sand dunes.
Day 5: Merzouga Desert and camel trek to the desert camp (desert tour)
We will travel to a checkpoint in the Merzouga desert this morning, after breakfast. We will exchange our 4×4 for camels (optional) when we get there. Then, under the guidance of a knowledgeable camel guide, visit the Erg Chebbi region. The trip to the campground will take about 90 minutes. We’ll watch a stunning sunset over the dunes when we get there. The following evening, this night will be spent beneath the desert sky in authentic Berber tents.
Day 6: Merzouga Desert – Todra Gorges – Dades Gorges
Continuing our desert tour early morning to see the sunrise over the dunes before traveling to a nearby hotel to get ready and eat breakfast. The tallest and narrowest gorge in Morocco is Todra Gorge, which we will reach after passing via Rissani and Tinghir. We will continue driving through the Dades Valley after lunch at the Gorge. We will pause to take in the scenery of the geological formation locally referred to as “Monkey Toes.” We spend the night at Dades Valley tonight.
Day 7: Dades Gorges – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech
Today’s personal desert tour proceeds with a journey to Ouarzazate, known as “the African Hollywood,” and Kalaat Mgouna. We can go to the local movie studio and Kasbah here (Fortress). The next stop will be Ait Ben Haddou, where we will explore the greatest Kasbah in all of Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we make our way over the High Atlas Mountains, we’ll eventually arrive in Marrakech, where we will have the night.
Day 8: Marrakech guided tour
That day of our desert tour from Casablanca is completely dedicated to the red city of Marrakech. You will see the city’s top sights, including the well-known Jamma el-Fna Square, the Koutoubia Mosque, the souks, palaces, and museums. We will also take a look at the Majorelle Museum, The Menara Gardens, and Gueliz. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the city at your leisure after lunch at a neighborhood eatery. Visiting one of the several food kiosks, a hammam, or both in Jamma el Fna Square for dinner. Before going back to your riad or hotel in Marrakech.
Day 9: Marrakech – Essaouira (1-day excursion)
We will go on a walking tour of the lovely Essaouira today, a medieval city on the Atlantic seaboard with Skala de la Kasbah walls from the 18th century and a more laid-back Medina. We then spend the final night at your accommodation or riad in Marrakech.
